Thursday, Jan. 14 our students had a tour of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital L&D unit. Here are some student’s insights/observations. Here is a link to the photos.
Some of the issues that stood out to me in the LDR were wire management hazards, the lack of space in case of an emergency resuscitation (there is no way 4-5 people could fit around that Panda Warmer), the # of waste receptacles that are in a single room (there were 4 or 5 large receptacles for different types of trash), and the issue of nurses working on two different computer systems simultaneously in the LDR (could the machines talk to each other while using a single split screen?). In the PACU, I am still disturbed that there are only flimsy curtains between patients waiting for c-Sections, and that there are still shared recovery rooms at LPCH.
Special Thanks to Jane Brinkerhoff, patient care manager at LPCH L&D unit who generously made time to give our students a tour of the facility.
